Metropolitan Solutions Conference

Safety and reliability in urban infrastructures

The majority of the world’s population today lives in cities and conurbations, and the proportion of city-dwellers will continue to increase rapidly. But many of our cities can no longer accommodate the demands of their inhabitants - and that situation is only going to get worse in future, unless our urban infrastructures are systematically expanded, upgraded and made safer and more reliable.

Inhalt-Linke-Spalte

There are two major challenges to be confronted. Firstly, in order to ensure that urban populations can live together in harmony their infrastructures need to be safe, secure and reliable. And secondly, the people who plan and design them must live up to their regional and global responsibilities. These challenges are already upon us today - as manifested in daily news reports about security breaches in communications networks, energy supply networks struggling to meet demand, and transport networks that can no longer cope with rising traffic volumes.

The Metropolitan Solutions Conference, with its tagline "Safety and reliability in urban infrastructures", will face these challenges headon, formulating strategies and options, presenting solutions - and itself making use of global communications infrastructures in the process.

The new format

The Metropolitan Solutions Conference takes place in fall 2012. As well as the main physical event in Hannover there will be online conferences streamed live on other continents, with participants logged in via the Web. As the day progresses so the Conference will migrate around the globe. In Hannover the contributors to a closing discussion will formulate various proposals that will then serve as the basis for further discussions at the other locations throughout the day.

The locations

The conference's central location is the Convention Center in Hannover. Exclusive conference partners will be organizing further meetings in a number of different cities. These local events will be linked up via live feeds, while the different time zones will keep the conference rolling non-stop - around the globe, around the clock.

The participants

The conference agenda is aimed at senior decision-makers from government, public administration and the business community. They will encounter speakers and thinkers from the worlds of business and science who are looking for new ways forward, as they discuss the future of key technologies for the urban infrastructure and formulate recommendations for action.

The context

The conference takes place in fall 2012 after the two flagship fairs HANNOVER MESSE - the venue of the "Metropolitan Solutions Forum" - and CeBIT at "Urban Solutions Forum" . Apart from the close thematic linkage with both these trade fairs, the conference will also make a number of very specific connections with these events: the beacon projects that will be presented in detail at “Metropolitan Solutions” will be unveiled for the first time at the conference.
