A new material improves energy management in e-cars

Scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute are leveraging a newly developed composite material to reduce heating up of dashboards due the sun's rays, thus indirectly increasing the range of electric vehicles.

As part of the EU research project OPTEMUS (Optimized Energy Management and Use), the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability ( LBF ), along with partners from industry and science, is conducting research into how to increase the range of electric vehicles through holistic energy management. Project leader Paul Becker from the Fraunhofer LBF emphasizes: "Increasing the sales of electric vehicles is only possible by improving not only performance, such as the range, but also occupant comfort. Among other things, this includes useful and customer-oriented thermal management in the vehicle's interior."

Thermo-management has a positive effect on both the interior temperature and the range of electric vehicles. To do so, the scientist makes use of an innovative composite material that significantly reduces the high dashboard surface temperature caused by constant exposure to direct sunlight. Researchers at the Fraunhofer LBF achieved a temperature reduction of 46%. This saves on energy required for air conditioning, which in turn boosts the vehicle's range.
