The " Berkeley DeepDrive " artificial intelligence (AI) research group from the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, focuses on machine vision and learning in automotive applications. One of the goals of Continental's cooperative project with the research group is to increase the speed of neural networks in cars. The two partners seek to develop concepts for operating AI applications in a particularly memory-efficient manner, thereby accelerating and optimizing neural networks. They also want to make AI systems safer. Their main aim is to develop test methods for AI algorithms in safety-relevant systems. The German supplier is basically looking to speed up implementation of AI research findings in its series production.

Continental has been intensifying its work on the use of AI in the automotive industry since 2015 and cooperates with, among others, NVIDIA, Baidu, the University of Oxford, the Technical University of Darmstadt, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (India). In May 2018, the Group opened a competence center for deep machine learning in Budapest.
