Porto Santo is located next to Madeira in the Atlantic, with an area of 42 km² and has just under 6000 inhabitants. Solar plants and wind farms are already installed on the island, but this is not enough for the island administration. The Sustainable Porto Santo – Smart Fossil Free Island project, which aims to increase the share of renewable energy from the current level of 15% to 30%, also seeks to break new ground in energy storage. Renault is supplying 14 small Zoe cars and six Kangoo ZE vans. Both models are completely electric. These vehicles can be connected at a total of 40 charging stations in Porto Santo. They will also serve as decentralized, mobile power storage. At the end of 2018, their batteries are supposed to provide energy at peak load times, which they do not need during that time. Thirdly, it is planned to use the old batteries of the vehicles as additional long-term storage, according to the press release .

Other car manufacturers are pursuing similar projects. Honda installed a bidirectional charging station for electric vehicles at its European research and development center in Offenbach last autumn. In August 2016, Nissan set up ten Vehicle-to-Grid charging stations in Copenhagen, along with the Italian energy provider Enel and the Danish company Frederiksberg Forsyning.
