Entering into a strategic partnership , Volkswagen and Microsoft will collaborate to develop the ‘Volkswagen Automotive Cloud’, one of the largest industry clouds for all future Volkswagen digital services and mobility offerings. The Supervisory Board of VW AG has already approved a corresponding agreement between the two companies.

In future, all in-car services for vehicles of the core Volkswagen brand as well as the Group-wide cloud-based platform (also known as One Digital Platform, ODP) will be built on Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, and platform services such as Azure IoT Edge will also be used. In its announcement, the Group states that the partnership is a decisive step for Volkswagen in its transformation into a mobility provider with a fully networked vehicle fleet and digital ecosystem. As part of the agreement, Volkswagen will establish a new automotive cloud development office close to Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington State. Microsoft will provide support to Volkswagen as it ramps up its new automotive cloud development office, in which some 300 IT specialists are expected to work in the near future.
