Student from Saxony takes the plunge

It sometimes takes generations for everyday objects to be further developed in small, evolutionary steps – even though many users are annoyed on almost a daily basis by their inherent limitations. At some point it suddenly all becomes too much for one user and he starts thinking about revolutionary changes. In this case, the “he” is a “she”, is called Laura Spang and is a BA student at the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. Driving with hydrogen

As part of the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP), visitors to HANNOVER MESSE 2013 have the opportunity to take emission-free vehicles with fuel cell technology from CEP partners Daimler, GM/Opel, Honda and Toyota for a test drive on the exhibition grounds. Linde AG, a leading supplier of hydrogen refueling solutions, is supplying all the fuel required. While previous defense solutions focused primarily on networked data lines, digitally controlled machines that receive new program codes by USB stick were left defenseless against attack. At HANNOVER MESSE 2013, security specialist Norman is unveiling its Norman SCADA Protection Scanner Station for USB sticks.

Mobility unchanged!

The rise of pedelecs and electric bikes seems virtually unstoppable. While the electric revolution is just getting under way in the automotive sector, it has long been in full swing for bicycles. The winner of this year’s HERMES AWARD – one of the most valuable technology prizes worldwide – is Bosch Rexroth AG from Lohr. The award was presented during the opening ceremony of HANNOVER MESSE 2013 by Prof. Johanna Wanka, Federal Minister of Education and Research. The company received the award for its Open Core Engineering project. This is a software solution that combines the previously separate worlds of PLC and IT into an integral offering comprising open standards, software tools, function packages and an Open Core interface.

The term intralogistics refers to the logistical flow of materials and goods on a company’s business premises. One special feature of this process is the interdisciplinary cooperation between providers and experts in different areas. It was this feature that encouraged the Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik GmbH (BIBA) to set up a cross-institutional group pavilion at HANNOVER MESSE 2013 to showcase the latest developments in logistics research.

Successful thanks to ideas from motor racing

Machines operated or controlled directly by people are subject to ever stricter ergonomic requirements. The times in which professional robustness was the only criterion for a user interface are long gone. Energy-efficient transportation

Factors such as feed force, speed, positioning time and accuracy can be adapted by using a large number of optional components and a sophisticated configuration system. Remediation material

Areas around former electroplating works and tanneries are often heavily contaminated with chromates. The good solubility and resultant high mobility of chromates mean that not only neighboring soil and ground water are affected but also the region’s surface water. It’s already very clear that hydrogen will play a key role in the energy concepts of the future. It can be produced using the abundant electricity generated during the day by wind power and solar energy, and thus serves as a storage medium that can release this energy in the form of electricity from fuel cells when required. At HANNOVER MESSE 2013, the Landesinitiative Energiespeicher und -systeme Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony initiative for energy storage and systems) will be showing how the state can contribute to this concept.

There are already many technological developments that can “see” more than the human eye, including X-rays, optical sensors and classic radar systems. However, these are either harmful to health, not economically viable or their “gaze” is simply not penetrating enough. To fill this gap, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has developed a modular millimeter wave sensor that can “see through” solid, non-metallic materials such as paper, wood, plastic sheets and even dust and fog. At HANNOVER MESSE 2013, the compact radar will be showing exactly what it can do.

Innovative nanoscope enables marker-free chromosome typing

The human genome has been fully decoded since April 2003 – but getting there was a long and difficult process. Since then, genetic research has become more and more important. This made it essential to find a method of reliable, largely automated and reproducible chromosome typing. Based on one of their patents, researchers from Reutlingen University worked with partners to develop a marker-free nanoscope that is set to be on show at HANNOVER MESSE 2013.
