Description

In the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), machines, tools and controllers transform into carriers of digital information: They become “smart.” They are able to process data and relay commands autonomously. This increased connectivity holds opportunities as well as security risks. Those risks may lead to loss of sensitive information, to attacks on individual machines or even to production downtimes. Yet it remains unclear who is responsible for ensuring security of Industry 4.0.

So far, operational technology (OT) has focused on production and industrial equipment to ensure their availability without any connection to the Internet. Information technology (IT), however, takes care of data security and has little to no experience in dealing with industrial systems. IT and OT therefore must cooperate closely and develop new security concepts for the smart factory to succeed. Only this allows for a holistic approach towards security.
