Description

The high share of fluctuating renewables in the Mexican power system requires the grid operator CENACE to use accurate wind and solar power forecasts. These short-term forecasts provide crucial information on the weather-dependent power generation of renewables for the hours and days to come.  We report on a public-private-partnership project between CENACE, the GIZ Mexico and energy & meteo systems in the framework of the develoPPP programme. The aim of the co-operation is to increase awareness and introduce of system operators, regulatory authorities and other institutions in the Mexican and Central American energy sector to the current state-of-the-art in solar and wind power forecasting. In addition, the project includes a practical phase where CENACE receives short-term forecasts on a daily basis in order to integrate them into their decision making processes.
