In order to use the potential of the digitally networked economy, respectively Industry 4.0, the linked sensors, machines and systems must interoperably communicate with each other. The presentation takes a look to the challenges of production and the possibility to create a virtual image of the production process. As an application example, a digitally supported assembly process for the kart production in the Demofabrik Aachen is used. The basis for the presented model will be a real-time data acquisition, by means of unambiguous identification and locating, recognizes the assembly of incorrect parts or correct parts in the wrong place. Using an interactive visualized 3D model, the operator is dynamically guided through the process and the construction status will be documented. The basic principle for a smoothly interaction, is the event-based architecture, which encodes sensor messages in EPCIS production events and communicate via the 5G mobile standard and the OPC UA channel.
