Rotary slipper seals are subjected to very demanding conditions. High PV values and limited lubrication create high friction loss and the potential for high contact temperature, and high torque can induce seals rotation causing wear of the supposedly static contact area.

With unidirectional seals the influence of torque and temperature can be significantly reduced by extensive pressure balancing of the seal and/or by preventing seals rotation by securing the seal in the hardware. With bidirectional seals these possibilities are less easily incorporated and a significant amount of work has enjoyed only limited or conditional success. Specifically much attention has been applied to ensure pressure balancing in either direction e.g. by external valves, or by allowing the seal to tilt around it's circumferential axis.

In the present article a new seal design with an internal valve function is described, and the performance is illustrated by test results.
