Within the context of Industry 4.0 sensors, machines and production facilities will be connected to the Internet and therefore must have built-in connectivity interfaces. The various technologies such as DSL/Ethernet, WLAN, Cellular, LoRa and many more are available to use. Nevertheless, every technology has its pros and cons and different impact on the business model in terms of finance, functionality and especially security. The Industrial Internet of Things has totally different requirements from what we know and see in the Smart Home sector, Smart Metering applications and the B2C market. Thus, the presentation discusses the various technologies and classifies this complex topic in the RAMI-Model 4.0 within the functional layers of an organization, the product life cycle including the value stream as well as the hierarchy levels in and outside of the organization.
