On September 2nd, 2016 the German Act of Smart Metering came into power as central law of the digitalization of the energy revolution and thus sets the legal framework for smart metering. The new German law on smart metering contains the complex legal framework for the rollout of intelligent metering systems ad modern meters. These smart meters can be a valuable contribution in order to better coordinate generation and consumption of energy. In the light of an increasing proportion of renewable energies, which production is not always equal but depends on day or night time, weather and time of the year, such a coordination becomes more important. Apart from the rollout obligation, the new German law on smart metering contains extensive legal requirements in order to ensure data protection. This includes specific rules for smart meter gateways (the communication part of the intelligent metering system) and the administration of such smart meter gateways.
