Arguably the most important change digitisation entails for enterprises, will be the adaption of current or development of new business models. Very likely future business models will have a strong cross-cutting character over enterprises or even branches. That means interoperability and appropriate interfaces will play a central role. Obviously stakeholder will need to focus on standards. Enterprises will be challenged to preserve an overview on standardisation activities, at least in their own domain. Borders between different branches dissolving due to digitisation, render this ever more challenging especially since different standardisation paradigms (e.g. consortial standards vs. consensual) clash more often.

This lecture will give an overview upon the challenges and opportunities standards and standardisation provide for the development of business models with respect to digitisation and most prominently Industrie 4.0.
