The engineering of complex automation systems has fed a generation of automation engineers. The advent of the Internet of Things, using standard IT to connect anything with everything, has not, or not yet, changed the fact that engineering still is amongst the most significant cost drivers for manufacturing companies. In order to support state of the art applications such as predictive maintenance and real-time analytics, new approaches for plant connectivity have to be supported. This talk explains how the netIOT architecture addresses these challenges, and which tasks still call for interdisciplinary collaboration.
