Description

The German electricity market is the largest in Europe and was fully liberalized in 1998. With approximately 32 percent renewable energy electricity share in 2017, Germany is already well on the way to meeting its stated 2020 target of 35 percent. Challenges remain the integration of volatile energy sources into the power supply, its transmission over long distances and the question of efficient storage technologies to address seasonal and geographical fluctuations. Hydrogen, produced from renewable electricity through electrolysis, could be the link that’s needed to yoke together the electricity, heat and mobility sectors and building an integrated energy system.
