The demands on sliding materials used as slide bearings and seal rings for example, are permanently increasing.
Hard materials such as silicon carbides have long been fully established but they reach their limits when hydrodynamic lubrication cannot be ensured.
Types of materials used in tribologically loaded systems are as diverse as the fields of application concerning complex conditions of wear and stress, media etc.
The presentation gives an overview from hard silicon carbide to soft carbon materials and considers strategies to increase the wear resistance depending on different materials and application cases. Determining factors are formulations, structures, special treatments like thermal processes, impregnations and coatings.
The coating with diamond (sp3) can give the silicon carbide machine parts an extended ranges of capability.
