Description

Complex monitoring and control systems are required to increase the productivity and flexibility of modern milling processes. For this purpose, detailed process information is essential, which cannot be adequately recorded with the measuring systems currently available on the market. In order to counteract this situation, a tool carrier with integrated cutting force sensors was developed at the Fraunhofer IWU. For this purpose, piezoelectric thick-film sensors were applied to a sensor plate behind the insert. The sensor technology is therefore close to the point of operation, but does not have to be replaced when changing the inserts.

The electronics for operating the sensors are integrated in the rotating tool carrier. The sensor is powered by an RFID-based radio link, which also transmits the measurement data to the machine.
