Originating from a competition initiated by the Ruhr Initiative Group ("Initiativkreis Ruhr"), InnovationCity Ruhr demonstrates in Bottrop since 2010 what climate-friendly urban conversion can look like. The goal is to reduce CO2-emissions in the model region by 50 percent and increase the citizen's quality of life. The pilot region includes 2,463 ha, c. 70,000 inhabitants and 14,474 buildings. By means of measures and projects concluded and those already initiated, the implementation of which is certain, a reduction of the CO2-emissions by 2020 (since 2010) of approx. 38 percent is obtained. Since mid of 2016 the holistic InnocationCity approach is being transferred to the whole Ruhr area: According to the model of Bottrop, 20 urban quarters in 17 cities currently get integrated concepts.
