Feeling by seeing
Smart robots that are ready for flexible automation in digital factories require a skill set quite different from what today's automation solutions can offer. They need advanced perception capabilities in order to adapt to their environment and to the objects they manipulate. Also, they require a high sensitivity in their grippers and fingers for flexible manipulation, as needed for customized and flexible production in digital factories.RoVi offers an innovative and cost-effective software-based sensor solution, giving robots the skills outlined above. Our patented technology features rich sensory feedback, providing measurements of joint positions of the robot arm, as well as force, torque and tactile data at the end-effector. Sensing is performed remotely, using a standard camera connected to our vision software. Complex and costly hardware sensors are replaced by our software, reducing hardware complexity and weight, as well as costs.RoVi is a spin-off project at TUM.
