The research project Spintronics Technology Platform in Rhineland-Palatinate (STeP) has obtained the Innovation Award Rhineland-Palatinate 2015. The joint project of the TU Kaiserslautern and the University of Mainz (JGU) has been set up with the participation of the company Sensitec in its facilities in Mainz. The partners have achieved significant progress in the development of novel magnetic sensors.
A novel approach for technology transfer directly from the universities to an industrial process is required for the subsequent integration of research results in conventional production lines in the semiconductor industry. SteP represents an example for a rapid implementation of university research results into an industrial environment. Typically it often takes years for ideas and products to find their way from university basic research into industrial applications. One additional aspect of the STeP project was also to connect small and medium-sized enterprises to a centralized pool of existing skills and infrastructure, and make the diverse potential applications in spintronics accessible.
