Product description

Wear particles in gearboxes can cause abrasion of components and failure of machines and plants. In order to achieve a long service life of lubricating and hydraulic oils their maintenance in the process is necessary. A suitable method for removing particles from oils is the magnetic separation.

For this application an Open-Gradient Magnetic Separator was developed at the University of Kaiserslautern. In the apparatus inclined lamellar baffles are used to divide the apparatus in several parallel flow channels. Due to the flow guide a long residence time of the fluid is possible. Outside of the flow channels a suit-able number of permanent magnets are positioned to achieve a magnetization of the baffles. Due to the paramagnetic nature of the material the baffles lose their magnetization after the removal of the permanent magnets. Therefore the magnetic separator can be cleaned easily.

For efficient particle separation large gradients of the magnetic field intensity are essential. This was obtained via CFD simulations of the process. An amplification and multiplication of the gradients of the magnetic field are achieved by using paramagnetic perforated sheets which are arranged in pairs with the baffles.
