The further marine researchers advance into the deep sea, the more they struggle with enormous water pressure. Pictures from the depths of the oceans therefore require elaborate camera technology. Researchers from Kiel's Faculty of Engineering and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel have developed a technique for the mapping of the deep sea.
The special camera can compose underwater areas the size of four soccer fields in thousands of images in HD resolution and highlight distinctive points on the seafloor. Diving robots are often equipped with a special gondola, which carries a large number of measuring cameras, such as a 4K video camera or SLR camera with LEDs. Examples of such mapping and the camera are presented in the exhibit.
