Sophisticated just-in-sequence automotive manufacturing production lines require all automatic manufacturing equipment to guarantee the highest possible levels of availability and the shortest possible cycle times and changeover times.
Four systems can each pick up more than 280 different types of vehicle drive shafts (with lengths of 400 mm to 2000 mm) out of an overhead electric rail conveyor before automatically balancing and then forwarding them out of the cell. For this purpose, the imbalance of the drive shaft is first identified and precisely measured before a different station of the system customizes the counterbalance which is then automatically welded onto the correct areas of the drive shaft by an industrial robot. Industrial robot and balancing machine are equipped with extremely compact (servo-powered) gripping systems that allow the processing of different drive shafts - which may arrive in a totally arbitrary, chaotic sequence - within one minute, ensuring the fastest possible automatic conversion to the type of shaft in need of reworking.
