The brakes are made as:
* fail safe
A fail safe brake uses the oil pressure to keep the brake open, the brake will close and brake when the oil pressure disappears, for example in the case of power failure. The brake uses springs to brake.
With an active brake you have to do something actively in order to brake. For the brake to brake you need to apply oil pressure (as in a car). There are no springs in the caliper.
A brake consists of two calipers, one on each side of the disc, and these clamp in on the disc at the same time. If the brake for example is to be mounted directly on a gearbox and/or on a system with a possibility for axial movement, you mount a monospring brake. The monospring consists of a brake caliper and a "holding" caliper. Both are mounted on an axis, which means that they can move and adjust if the position of the disc changes.
