The coupling provides the flexible connection between engine and gearbox for a failsafe operation in locomotives, gensets, and splitter gears.
Developed especially for drives subject to torsional vibration, CENTAMAX cou-plings with performance ranges of 0.1 to 48 kNm are among the highest tor-sionally elastic couplings available on the market. As a flexible connection between engine and gearbox, CENTAMAX couplings shift critical speeds far below idling speed and allow them to utilize the whole engine's working speed without limitation. The drive train is then subjected to very low continuous vibratory torques and stress on the aggregates is reduced. Another important advantage is the coupling's fail-safe operation under misfiring conditions. In addition, the coupling offers torsional softness and a linear characteristic which ensure that resonances are not shifted by the low load.
The essential design principle of the coupling is based on a rubber disc, vul-canized to the inner hub and with tooth engagement on the outer ring for blind-fitting to the drive flange. Special material mixes of natural rubber or silicone are used to ensure the coupling's high allowable energy loss for dissi-pating inside heat caused by vibrations and misalignment. In the new "High Thermal Capacity" (HTC) design, the rubber disc of the CENTAMAX is divided into two slim disc halves. This increases heat dissipation by another 100 %, prolongs the coupling's service life, and allows the usage of a smaller coupling in many applications. With its short design and axial plug-on features, the coupling is the perfectly suited for a connection to flywheels in diesel engine flange housings.
