Phosphors are versatile due to their extraordinary properties. At Fraunhofer IKTS, ceramic phosphors are chemically optimized for LEDs, for example. Conventional LEDs have the disadvantage that the polymers yellow and as a result the luminous intensity decreases. With the IKTS phosphors, the light output can be significantly increased. If these ceramic materials are irradiated with a laser, a main beam can be generated that is at least 600 meters wide. In addition, the luminaries can be combined with the advantageous properties of translucent and transparent ceramics. This results in powerful and long-lasting, transparent optoceramics, which can be used, among other things, in medical X-ray detectors.
