The CO2RENEW system uses a modified water electrolysis cell to perform the electrochemical reduction of CO2 (ERC) process. Concentrated CO2 from an industrial process or onsite power generation, or dilute CO2 from a mixed stream is fed to the electrochemical cell. Water or hydrogen is passed across the anode of the cell and electrochemically oxidized, giving off hydrogen ions and electrons. These hydrogen ions and electrons bombard the CO2 molecules at the cathode creating various hydrocarbon species. Different hydrocarbon products can be generated depending on the catalyst material being used and the operating conditions of the cell.
