automobiles. They often perform as intakes and drains or mixing chambers for material flows. The more complex and intertwined these pipes, the more sophisticated their manufacturing process. Especially in pipe systems with electrically or thermic insulating properties, e.g. in internal combustion engines or heat exchangers, manual fitting becomes a challenge. Here, various manufacturing technologies are applied, and generative methods are increasingly being adopted. In this context, however, electric or thermic bridges may develop that compromise continuous insulation. Scientists are working on multi-walled fittings that are manufactured using selective laser sintering. With this method, the pipe walls, which cover each other one by one, are all sintered in parallel, with metal powder being applied layer by layer. In planned cavities in between, the powder is not bonded and is removed. Depending on the desired application, the cavities are then sealed electrically or thermically, for example with ceramics, liquid or foam. The special feature with this method is that metal contact between the layers to be isolated is completely avoided by spacers at the ends being removed once the cavities have been filled. Finally, the gaps at the ends of the fittings are sealed off with insulation material. Originally developed for fusion technology, the insulating pipe segments are also suitable for other applications, such as heat exchangers, internal combustion and dispensing systems or battery technology. Generative manufacturing allows random three-dimensional geometries such as T-elements, elbows, spirals or pipe bends that are difficult to achieve with conventional methods. Special functions like elastic areas to compensate thermic expansion between the layers can be directly integrated.
