Product description

A MIM Flagstaff Nose or EMI nose shield, which serves as an external connector for a high-performance fiber optic module is fabricated through Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process. The part is made of 17-4 PH stainless steel. It has a density of 7.5 g/cm3, tensile strength of 130,000 psi (896MPa), yield strength of 106,000 psi (730MPa), an eight % elongation, and a 27 HRC as-sintered hardness. The part is coated by 0.5 micron of gold for appearance and corrosion resistance. The most challenging problem in fabricating this part is the thin wall structure, which is as thin as 0.03mm in some areas. The application of MIM gave the customer an estimated 40% cost savings. The part design has won the Grand Prize in the electrical/electronic components category in 2009 Metal Powder Industry Federation (MPIF) Design Excellence Award held in Las Vegas, USA.
