The complex geometries of the flip slider and hinge barrel capitalized on the advantages of PIM technology and elevated mobile design to a new level.
The adoption of MIM in fabricating these pair of hinges components allow cost saving up to >3 times (compared to machining process). 17-4PH stainless steel was used to provide enough functional strength for the hinges components. It has a density of 7.5 g/cm3, tensile strength of 130,000 psi (896MPa), yield strength of 106,000 psi (730MPa), an eight % elongation, and a 27 HRC as-sintered hardness. The part design has won the Grand Prize in the electrical/electronic components category in 2006 Metal Powder Industry Federation (MPIF) Design Excellence Award.
