Product description

Using the novel forging tool developed at IPH in cooperation with industrial partners will make the future production of steel pistons much faster at a lower price. For the first time, it is possible to pre-forge certain areas in forged parts, so-called undercuts. This way, pre-forging of pin bores in steel pistons is already possible during the forging process. The new approach facilitates subsequent machining considerably, speeding up the manufacturing process and reducing the overall costs. Moreover, grain flow is optimized and notch effects are reduced, thus making the piston more reliable.
Up to now, pin bores have been cut by chip removal after forging. Conventional forging tools are not suited to create undercuts, since afterwards part removal from the tool is impossible. Therefore, the new tool developed at IPH disposes of horizontally driven sliders. When the die moves down, the sliders are driven horizontally to the part, thus forging undercuts for the pin bores. When the die moves up again, the sliders are driven back, and the forged part can be removed from the tool.
