Canadian Hydrogen & Fuel Cell
We are all thinking differently about energy - how we use it, and where it comes from. Hydrogen is the universe's most common and simplest element and as a fuel provides benefits to energy security, the environment and economic growth.
Consisting of one proton and one electron, it is almost never found in a naturally free state but rather bonded to other elements (for example, when combined with oxygen, it forms water - H20).
Invisible, odourless, and non-toxic, hydrogen is used safely for many decades in a wide range of applications, including in the food, metal, glass and chemical industries. The global hydrogen industry is well established and produces 50 million tonnes of hydrogen per year.
Hydrogen is an excellent fuel for many reasons:
- Zero to near-zero GHG emissions depending on method of production
- Can be produced from fossil fuel-based feedstocks such as natural gas
- Can be produced from off-peak electricity from nuclear, solar, wind, tidal energy sources
- Waste stream hydrogen is available for capture from a variety of industrial processes
- Safe to produce, store, transport and use in fuel cells and internal combustion engines
- Can store off-peak energy produced by renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind and tidal generation
