Hardly any other topic has dominated communication technology as much as TSN in the past year. PI is also intensively involved with this technology and is therefore focusing on this topic at this year's Hanover Fair. TSN offers great opportunities, especially with regard to the implementation of Industry 4.0 projects. However, since it only defines a layer 2 for communication and therefore does not represent a fieldbus set, TSN must be meaningfully integrated into PI technologies. Since the technology has yet to be explained, we will be using live demos and videos at the Hanover Fair to explain not only the basics, but also how implementation in existing technologies can work. TSN has several advantages for the user. For example, standard Ethernet modules can be used at the field level. This reduces the connection costs for the manufacturers and a greater variety of devices can be expected for the users. In addition, consistent synchronous networks for clock-synchronous applications can be implemented with TSN. Previously, such networks had to be implemented separately and dedicated chips had to be integrated into the devices. The use of conventional Ethernet controllers will also enable higher network bandwidths in the future. Gigabit Ethernet can thus also be implemented faster at the field level. An important prerequisite for Industry 4.0 applications.In the live demo at the PI standard, development boards containing standard Ethernet controllers with integrated TSN communicate with PROFINET protocols synchronously.
