Automobile manufacture puts high demands on the integration of individual components. A low spatial volume of these components and a low weight of the overall system are desired to ensure that the vehicle shows optimum road performance and efficiency. Accordingly, there is a greater requirement for compact, light and simultaneously high-performance sub-components in the automobile. This is why multifunctional components, i.e. parts performing several functions simultaneously, are of advantage. For example, there is a potential for optimisation in electric drives. Basically, these consist of an electric machine, a cooling system and power electronics control. So far, in practice, large numbers of screws, nuts and cables have been used to connect these component groups with one another. In addition to time-consuming assembly, spatial requirements are sub-optimal in particular. Scientists at the KIT have achieved more compactness for an E-drive with a novel electro-mechanical connecting element. A special metal contact pin plays a key role in the concept. It combines three important functions. The contact pin has been force-fitted to the motor housing and penetrates it. Thanks to its length, it reaches up to the cooling system and the power electronics module that has been mounted on the latter. The electric conductivity of the contact pin enables the transfer of electric energy between the component groups without any external cabling. In addition, the contact pin performs the role of the mechanical link between the motor housing, the cooling and the power electronics model. The connection between the components created by mechanical pressure ensures good heat transfer and supports cooling. The advantage of the multifunctional connecting element is that an electric, thermic and mechanical connection is achieved with just one appliance. In addition to saving space, the reduced weight and less material required are further benefits.
