Product description

In the project Speed2E an electric high speed drive system (30,000 min-1) for cars was designed, built, investigated experimentally, and optimised. Focuses of the investigation were the increase of the power density of the electrical drive and the efficiency of the vehicle by an increase of the maximum operating speed of the electric drive. A new type of drive concept, resulting from the project Doppel-e-Antrieb of the BMWi-tender Antriebstechnologien für die Elektromobilität (ATEM), based on two electric drives and a gearbox incorporating two parallel power trains was implemented. One of the power trains incorporates a switchable two gear transmission.

Main research topics:
- Minimising losses in electrical and tribological systems
- Analysis of the vibration behaviour of the complete drive train
- Investigation of the applicability of induction drives for high speed applications
- Design and test of form-locking clutches for gear change without traction discontinuity
- Development of control strategies to optimise acoustics and efficiency

Compared to state of the art drive trains with lower operating speeds the project (Speed2E) could show numerous advantages:
- Increase of power density and efficiency through intelligent operating strategies.
- Reduction of the mass of the high speed electrical drives by 33 % compared to a reference design.
- Savings in the use of cost-intensive materials such as copper and rare earths.
