In microelectronics, solar technology or surface coating, many manufacturing processes for high-tech products are run in vacuum conditions. Turbopumps are employed in order to create the vacuum. Rotors with a very high rotational speed generate the required negative pressure conditions. If a pump rotor is suddenly blocked in the event of a failure, the so-called "crash", a plastic deformation, may occur, or the pump may even be ripped off. At the same time, the collapse of the vacuum can damage products. In order to get potential crash moments under control, the pump and the vacuum container are often fastened between the components with oversize bolted connections and weld seams. These are intended to dampen the forces if a crash occurs in the construction and prevent damage to the downstream pipes or the housing. This requires that the link with the pump is perfect and stable. However, owing to fitting and production tolerances, it may be difficult to fit in the pumps and the respective construction. Researchers at the KIT Institute for Technical Physics (ITEP) have now developed a device enabling a turbopump to be safely fitted onto a vacuum chamber. The pump is screwed onto a polygonal intermediate flange which, depending on the construction size, is then screwed polygonally onto a plate. For this purpose, tension elements (clamps) are used for fastening to the outer surfaces. They serve as a balancing element when force is transmitted if rotor failure occurs. Tolerances in the position of the plate and the flange can be compensated with cams. The intermediately applied flange connection provides torque protection and ensures tightness should the pump fail. Thanks to the flexible bracing of the flange, production tolerances in assembly can be compensated. While the pumps can be swiftly fitted or replaced, the use of uniform components saves construction time when fitting the pumps.
