Bielefeld University has about 18.000 students taking 82 different courses provided for by 13 faculties. More than 2.000 scientific and non-scientific staff members are employed at the university.
The distinguishing characteristic of the university is the interdisciplinary identity. A shining example of this is the Center for Interdisciplinary Research which brings together international experts in order to complete common projects. In 2007 Bielefeld University was successful in two separate projects within the framework of the Initiative for Excellence. Initially the Center of Excellence "Cognitive Interaction Technology" (Human-Machine-Communication) and the "Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology" will receive several million euros per year for the next five years form the initiative.
All faculties, institutions, services, seminar rooms and lecture halls of Bielefeld University are to be found all under one roof. The central university hall is a meeting point and place to communicate for students, scientists and employees. It offers a canteen, cafes, restaurants and shops. The university library covers the entire first floor of the building. According to the CHE-University-Ranking it is Germany's second-best university library.
