Innovation is the key for competition on todays markets, but innovating may be increasingly difficult for SMEs given that, more often than not, the development of new products requires very specialized skills that may not be found inside the company. This is where Open Innovation, or more prosaically the involvement of external experts, comes into play.
OPENiSME targets this issue, in order to support and increase the competitivity of European SMEs.
OPENiSME is a project co-funded by the CIP Programme of the European Union (Grant Agreement no. 621121), designed to help unlock the innovation capacity for smaller firms that aspire to grow, through the facilitation of new Open Innovation partnerships, primarily between SMEs and research institutions. The project is coordinated by T2i and composed of 7 partners: Academy of entrepreneurship, Hochsule Fulda, Idexlab, Institut Jozef Stefan, Laval Mayenne Technopole, Tages and Vision2020 Network.
Starting from a platform already successfully used by Large Companies, OPENiSME goal is to evolve it to satisfy the SMEs needs. The ability to search for expert through analysis of scientific literature allows to get in contact with virtually every researcher in the world.
Between December 2015 and May 2017, OPENiSME engaged roughly 300 SMEs in the platform trials that generated 42 contractual agreements, with an R&D value of more than 2 million Euros (i.e. research costs payed by the SMEs directly or thanks to national or EU co-financed projects) and a value for SMEs of more than 16 million Euros (i.e. expected increased revenues or savings).
