Product description

Lasting Regeneration of Aircraft Engines

The regeneration of complex capital goods, particularly jet engines, wind turbines, or railway vehicles, is an important issue because a significant proportion of the operating costs are a result of regeneration. Several possibilities for improving maintenance (regeneration) exist to make it more efficient and sustainable. The collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 871 "Regeneration of Complex Capital Goods" is organized into 20 subprojects, and contributes to developing a scientific basis for maintaining complex capital goods. The main goal of the CRC 871 is to develop novel methods for restoring or even improving the functional properties of capital goods in order to reuse as many of the worn components and resources as possible. The functional benefit of regenerated components and of the entire capital good are assessed by model-based simulations. Rule-based decisions are used to select the optimum regeneration path in order to obtain the maximum benefit for the customer.

Within the framework of the CRC 871, jet engines were chosen as an application example owing to their high complexity. The methods and procedures developed can also be transferred to other complex capital goods such as wind turbines, railway vehicles and heavy-duty gas turbines.
