Thanks to its large-scale use as arable land and grassland, the Wesermarsch is a valuable biotope for in part rare meadow bird species. Considerations as to how to market the agricultural products of this lovely countryside have resulted in a co-operation between the agricultural community, the butchery trade and the catering establishments for the purpose of a joint marketing effort. In November 2003 the association 'proRegion Wesermarsch/Oldenburg e.V.' was founded.
According to the motto 'Regional hospitality - experience and enjoy it' the association proRegion im Landkreis Wesermarsch stages the "Ox Weeks" every year in autumn when the cattle are driven from the pastures into their winter stables and the "Lamb Weeks" in summer. The high-quality meat from the pasture-raised oxes and the lambs are then offered by restaurants and butchers as seasonal regional specialities. Regional value-added chains are being further developed.
The "Schlemmerkiste Wesermarsch" ("Culinary Box Wesermarsch") promotion marked the first combined marketing activity of agricultural products from the Wesermarsch. It opens up further marketing potential for regional products within and beyond the Wesermarsch. Alongside salami and ham and many more products from pasture-fed oxes and lambs, cheeses and honey from local producers fill the regional goods basket.
