Product description

A team of BAM researchers is examining the use of embedded sensors in bridges and other structures in the project "Communicating sensor systems for structural health monitoring and environmental monitoring" (KonSens). The goal is to determine corrosion damage and needed repairs more quickly and cost-effectively in the future. Passive RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) sensors can be integrated directly into a component or structure. Such wireless sensors enable the detection of corrosion or moisture directly in the component without inserting cables, which might form weak spots. The measurement and read-out of the sensors is carried out exclusively by the energy of the electromagnetic field generated by the RFID reader. This is a prerequisite for the functioning of the technology since an embedded battery cannot be easily replaced after discharge. The embedded sensors can be retained in the component and used for decades, during the entire service life of the structure.
