SMC materials are composed of metal powder particles with an electrically isolating surface. The powder is pressed together with an inorganic matrix material and forms an isotropic material. The following heat treatment relaxes the material and creates the strength, while the isolating layer is retained around each particle. The isolating layer delimits the eddy currents of movements between the particles if the material is exposed to a changing magnetic field and reduces the reaction time.
Apart from the conventional application of SMC materials in metal powder cores, the future for soft magnetic materials lies in the field of electric motors. The Somaloy® materials form the basis for the SMC components that are used in electric motors. All Somaloy® material is received as a press-finished mixture. The mixture is adapted to the specific purposes and considers the corresponding motor settings - like, for example, operating frequency and flux density. The key to its success lies in the reconstruction of the magnetic flux current loop and through the use of the unique forming possibilities that the SMC technology offers.
