The requirements for production of the future keep increasing in the age of
Industry 4.0: Processes have to be flexible, intelligently networked, and effective. Production facilities must be safe and intuitive to operate while simultaneously using resources efficiently. Against this background, there have been frequent demands in recent years for a further development of the sensor technology that is responsible for measurement data. This is intended to generate the measurement data where measuring systems can only be integrated with difficulty, for instance in direct contact between a work piece and tool.
The Fraunhofer IST has therefore developed a sensory thin film system that is applied directly to the surface of tools and component inserts. It is a multilayer system that, in addition to local force and pressure measurement on surfaces with complex shapes, also enables local temperature measurement in various areas of the component and is highly resistant to wear.
There are many examples of possible applications, from sensory washer systems to tool inserts with directly applied thin film heating structures for plastic injection molding to sensory tools for the deep drawing process and bending. At the "Plasma and Laser Surface Engineering" joint exhibition stand at the Hannover Messe trade fair (hall 6, exhibition stand B34), the Fraunhofer IST is presenting these sensor developments.
