Artificial intelligence expected to better protect consumers

The German Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection (BMJV) plans to promote the development of artificial intelligence (AI) applications for consumer protection purposes. Proposals from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular will receive financial support.

The BMJV expects artificial intelligence (AI) to develop into a key technology for everyday consumer life. That is why the Ministry is funding the development of AI applications with its program for promoting innovation in consumer protection . The funding is slated for AI-based application scenarios and prototypical solutions that facilitate the everyday life and self-determination of consumers, are designed to meet the needs of specific target groups, improve the quality of life and contribute to consumer protection. The solutions could include technologies to strengthen data sovereignty.

The funding is aimed at SMEs with operating facilities or branches in Germany, at universities and at research and development institutions. Joint projects between partners from science, technology and practice that combine technical innovation and consumer-oriented applications on the basis of artificial intelligence are desired in particular. The maximum funding amount is 800,000 euros. Applications can be submitted via the funding portal until July 3, 2019.
