High-speed microscope simplifies quality control

A new microscope from the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT can digitalize samples at up to 500 frames per second and be combined with gesture control for simpler operation.

Quality control is essential, but has it limits when it comes to large objects: According to the scientists from the Fraunhofer IPT, it often takes far too long to take microscope images at high magnifications, which is why in these cases many companies can only examine random samples. The researchers have therefore now developed a high-speed microscope that can digitalize samples at up to 500 frames per second. To do so, the microscope stage moves the object continuously while the images are taken at high speed. The device can be connected to 3D glasses with a sensor for gesture recognition. The high-resolution scans are combined to form an overall image that the user can enlarge or save, for example by using hand movements.
