IG Metall compiled the transformation atlas on the basis of data from almost 2,000 companies with a total of more than 1.7 million employees. The results indicate that digitization will primarily affect jobs in manufacturing, assembly, administration and logistics as well as technical customer service - with approx. 57% of jobs being at risk, according to IG Metall. Companies with more than 1,000 employees as well as the automotive and supplier industries are expected to see the most dramatic job reduction. 54% of companies in this sector expect job losses.

According to IG Metall, most of the companies surveyed are poorly prepared for digital change. About half of them lack systematic personnel planning or needs assessment for personnel and qualification. It is thus necessary to invest in new products, processes and business models as well as in professional training for all employee groups. The trade union demands that the government provide clear framework conditions for the energy and mobility transition, investments worth billions in infrastructure, structural funds for regions particularly affected by structural change and a transformation short-time work allowance .
