Alternative, more environmentally friendly fuels are one focus of the MCN’s work, within the scope of which it has prepared an analysis of the potential of methanol in shipping. In connection with this, the MCN has set up an innovation network, managed by consulting firm embeteco . The plan is to carry out projects to develop innovative products that will enable methanol to be used safely and reliably as an alternative fuel for smaller ships. The long-term strategy is to establish methanol as an alternative to other concepts such as LNG, hydrogen, and GTL diesel.

The Central Innovation Program for SMEs (ZIM) has now given the network the green light for its ‘ Green Meth’ project . MCN members, companies, and engineering consultancies, as well as potential users of the technology will work closely together on the project. They are supported by the research institutions BIBA – Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik, DLR Institute of Networked Energy Systems, Wismar University of Applied Sciences, Jade University of Applied Sciences , and Northern Business School.
