Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) and the US research and development company Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) have established a joint venture to develop a new container transport system . This is expected to make the transportation of containers in and around the port much faster and easier. More than 4,000 containers per day could apparently be transported this way, eliminating heavy goods traffic in the port area. As a first step, a transfer station will be created at a port terminal for test purposes. A transport capsule for standard sea containers is to be developed at the same time.

Hyperloop is an idea of Elon Musk, founder and CEO of automotive manufacturer Tesla and aerospace business SpaceX. The concept involves a maglev train travelling at high speed through a partial-vacuum tunnel. Test tracks are already being built in California and in Toulouse, France. Engineers there are working chiefly on a passenger transportation system, whereas the Port of Hamburg project is about transporting goods. HTT hopes to unveil its first container transport capsule in October.
