Intel, xilinx and Microsoft got the short end of the deal in the negotiations: as announced on March 11, NVIDIA, a US-based graphics processor and chipset developer NVIDIA is buying the Israel- and US-based network equipment supplier Mellanox Technologies for about $6.9 billion (6.1 billion euros).

The largest acquisition in NVIDIA history brings together two leading high-performance computing (HPC) companies. More than half of the world's top 500 supercomputers are based on NVIDIA and Mellanox technologies. All leading cloud service providers and computer manufacturers also count among the customers of the two companies. NVIDIA plans to leverage the acquisition to focus more strongly on the data center market," said Jensen Huang, NVIDIA founder and CEO: "We are pleased to combine Nvidia's computing platform with Mellanox's networking platform to help develop next-generation data center solutions."
