Open-source software plans reliable power grids

Scientists at the University of Kassel, in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute IEE, have developed software that will considerably simplify the planning and operation of more effective power grids.

13 Aug. 2019

The program, called ‘pandapower’, is an open-source tool freely available at www.pandapower.org . It will be continuously further developed by the University of Kassel and the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (IEE) and is already being used by the German Federal Network Agency, amongst others.

With pandapower, network operators can respond for example to the expansion of e-mobility, new storage options, or additional EEG (German Renewable Energy Act) plants. The program allows utilization to be better predicted during grid operation and, in grid planning, enables the partial or fully automated creation, calculation and analysis of very many different variations. Moreover, for every solution multiple scenarios can be calculated automatically, for example with reference to different penetration with decentralized generation plants.
